What happens when you combine a hockey stick, a golf ball, and the spirit of Happy Gilmore?
Pure magic – and that’s exactly what happened at this year’s Summit Hero Golf Classic benefitting the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
We’re proud sponsors of this incredible event, and our Axis Sports Medicine team had an absolute blast. This year, we helped bring some unconventional fun to the Raven Golf Course at Three Peaks while supporting America’s heroes.
The tournament, which raised an astounding $100,000+ for wounded veterans and first responders, gave us the perfect opportunity to showcase our playful side while contributing to a cause close to our hearts.
Recap of the Day
Our sponsored “Happy Gilmore-style” longest putt challenge was undoubtedly one of the day’s highlights. We loved watching skilled golfers trade their precision putters for hockey sticks.
It may seem silly, and begs the question: why take time out for so much fun?
Because it’s events like this that matter in our world today. It’s the ability not to take ourselves too seriously while seriously supporting those who’ve sacrificed for others – that’s the magic that makes what we do in our clinics and out in the community so effective.
It was a packed day, and our longest putt challenge was a highlight. Golfers lined up throughout the day, and some discovered hidden hockey talents they never knew they had!
(Some learned that golf and hockey skills don’t always translate – but everyone left with smiles and stories to share!)
Beyond the putting challenge, we were thrilled to donate a hockey stick signed by professional golfer Nancy Lopez (who recently appeared in the new “Happy Gilmore 2”) in the tournament’s auction.
This event holds special significance for our community, directly benefiting local heroes, including Summit County’s own Brandon Adam – an Army veteran who received a mortgage-free smart home through Tunnel to Towers after being severely wounded in Iraq.
The tournament brought together Summit County’s first responders in friendly competition, with teams from local police, fire, and EMS, and the Sheriff’s Office battling for bragging rights and a crystal trophy – a worthy prize!
We’re Proud to Support Local Initiatives
As physical therapists and athletic trainers, we spend our days helping people overcome challenges and reach their goals – and it’s moments like this that remind us that there is more than one way to accomplish that goal.
The Summit Hero Golf Classic let us apply that same energy to supporting those who’ve faced the ultimate challenges serving our country and communities.
We’re excited and hopeful that the $100,000+ raised will fund adapted smart homes, which are key for helping injured veterans and first responders to live independently with dignity.
Our sponsorship events remind us that being part of the Summit County community means more than providing excellent physical therapy services – it means showing up, having fun, and giving back.
So, whether we’re helping someone recover from a ski injury or sponsoring a hockey-stick putting challenge for heroes, it’s all about supporting our neighbors in their journey forward.
Here’s to another successful Summit Hero Golf Classic, and to all who made it possible. We’re already looking forward to next year’s tournament – and yes, we’re practicing our hockey-stick putting technique!
